Radio and social media explode after yesterday’s match. Here are the most targeted players
20th March – Milan
Yesterday’s defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for Roma fans, not only because they lost to their city rivals for the second time this season, but also because they gifted Lazio another Stracittadina victory thanks to Ibañez’s mistake (by now a derby cult). Lazio is now second in the standings with a five-point lead over Roma. After the loss, Roma fans took to radio and social media to express their disappointment. Not only was the Brazilian defender targeted, but also the team’s attitude, as they only tried to hurt Lazio after falling behind.
ANOTHER ERROR
The most targeted player by the fans was Roger Ibañez, who cost Roma the game with his third disastrous performance in a Rome derby. “Playing him against Lazio to see the same mistakes over and over again is self-harm!” exclaimed a fan on one of Rome’s radio stations that analyzes the team’s affairs 24/7. On Twitter, the tone became more aggressive: “Ibañez must leave Roma!” wrote Luca, to which another Roma fan replied: “He’s like Paolo Negro in 2000” (the Lazio defender who scored an own goal in the Stracittadina). “Ibanez’s expulsion exposes all the flaws of a tired and anonymous Roma,” was the melancholic comment from Riccardo, who clearly summed up the reasons for yesterday’s loss.
MOURINHO AND THE TEAM
However, reducing the slip-up against Lazio to Ibañez’s expulsion would be simplistic. Several fans questioned the way Roma approached the game. “We let them play for over an hour – a young Roma fan vented on the radio – we only woke up after Zaccagni’s goal. Substituting Dybala for tactical reasons and leaving a Pellegrini like yesterday’s on the field is a serious mistake.” Among the criticisms leveled at Mourinho were also some strategic choices: “In addition to taking out Dybala, he took out Llorente in the 78th minute, leaving Mancini on the field, who was cautioned and is now suspended. Who will play in defense against Sampdoria?” And again: “The absurd expulsion changes nothing compared to what we saw in the 30 minutes before. He lost the defensive tactics he used against Real Sociedad, which I sincerely hope not to see again. 30% possession of the ball is unacceptable to think about.”
REFEREE
But there are also those who point the finger at referee Massa. According to some, the whistle-blower is guilty of using non-uniform judgment. The first to attack the refereeing class was the former Roma striker Roberto Pruzzo (now a radio pundit): “Roma must officially request not to be refereed by Italian Federation referees. Yesterday, to get a yellow card, Lazio players had to commit five fouls, while Roma players were cautioned every time. War has broken out between Roma and the referees.” A view shared by many: “The game was distorted by Ibanez’s double booking in 30′, which would have made sense if Massa had used the same criterion with Romagnoli, who committed two yellow card fouls in the first 15′ of the second half, at 0-0. Everything else is a farce and ad hoc narration,” wrote Guglielmo on Twitter. However, this version does not convince those who do not seem willing to justify the conduct of the Brazilian defender: “Whatever you want, but two yellows in 30 minutes in their half of the field cannot be seen. We need to use our heads. We lost the last two games for the same reason.”
